* The most futuristic cities list is a forecast of which cities will be more futuristic in their skylines by 2030, NOT which skylines will be taller. Many proposals are pending, and some others will arise and get built.
This is a non-scientific forecast derived from social science's perspectives. Social science has a tendency to have a high margin of error trailing medical science, but this is another argument on itself.
Having a taller skyline does not necessarily means it looks more uptrend in architecture.
Futuristic means a more radical architecture than just traditional flat lines. While Hong Kong, Dubai, and New York have a taller skyline, having one or two radical buildings does not make them look futuristic, just taller.
Mumbai below, with significant build up could be the 5th most futuristic city in the world by 2030.
However, Dubai stands out because it is all new, and radical non-traditional buildings are being built. Currently, an in-depth evaluation is being made to see whether Chicago, Tianjin, Moscow or Singapore can make this cut. Hong Kong although taller, may actually start building an arsenal of more futuristic buildings like the one above in Tianjin, which has not been finished. Thus, Chicago, Tianjin, and Jakarta may not be considered futuristic enough, and could be displaced by Mumbai, Miami, or other Chinese cities, and even New York.
* Based on current construction trends, these will be the most futuristic skylines of cities with over 20 million inhabitants in 2030. These cities skylines will still change 15 years from today.
Dubai, Chicago, and Hong Kong are not projected to have over 20 million people by 2030. Yet their skylines will be in the top ten of all futuristic skylines. New York City did not meet the criteria due to the low density of futuristic buildings.
Moscow has a present older skyline, yet present and upcoming projects will be avant-garde and you should plan on visiting Moscow because it will look very impressive and sexy. A most updated global list for 2030 is still work in progress, and it will include cities with less than 20 million people.
A commodities boom will greatly accelerate projects again in Dubai, China, India, and Russia. It is possible that Mumbai's skyline could become radically futuristic by 2030-2035 shocking many who visited this city in 2000. Thus displacing Chicago, Singapore, Tianjin and other cities from their spots.
And while the commodities boom is still 7-10 years away from happening, or maybe longer since the price of gold is more likely going to $500 an ounce in the next 3 years or so. When commodities boom, some economies will reap great benefits.
In my opinion, Dubai will be the most futuristic city in the world in 2030, but Beijing and Seoul will close the gap. Many elements in the economy point the advantages that Seoul has in innovation over other more traditional economies reluctant to radical architecture.
Futuristic means more avant-garde than taller for the argument of this site and the skylines of the cities herein.
